More than a million individuals will spend their Christmas Day alone after a leading scientist warned that the Omicron wave is approaching ‘alarmingly quickly.’
The UK is expected to be struck by a’staggering’ number of cases, prompting worries that the NHS would be overburdened next month, with Covid hospital admissions reaching 2,000 a day.
According to The Times, the UK registered 59,610 coronavirus cases yesterday, with a fifth of them being the new coronavirus strain. However, the real figure might be far higher.
Dr Jenny Harries, the chief executive of the UK Health Security Agency (UKSHA), described the highly contagious new variety as “perhaps the most substantial danger we’ve received since the start of the epidemic.”
Because Christmas is just ten days away, everyone who tests positive after today must self-isolate on December 25.
According to the UKSHA, there are 4,713 confirmed Omicron cases in the UK, with 200,000 daily infections, according to Health Secretary Sajid Javid.
Ministers claim that the rate is doubling every two days, implying that around 100,000 people will be confirmed with Omicron by Christmas Eve, with about 1 million isolated the next day.
Dr Susan Hopkins, UKSHA’s senior medical advisor, said on Tuesday that if government modeling is true, limitations may be needed over the next four to eight weeks, predicting a “very challenging” month ahead.
‘We have been studying this virus for three weeks today, and in that time period we have shown that in the UK, this is growing very fast, with a growth rate of initially two to three days, and that growth rate seems to be shortening, rather than lengthening, at the moment,’ Dr Hopkins said in testimony to the Science and Technology Committee on Tuesday.
‘Even a tiny number of those persons needing hospitalization will have a huge effect on healthcare if we have a million infections a day,’ Dr Hopkins noted.

She recommended individuals to undergo a lateral flow test before socializing to limit the risk of spreading an asymptomatic virus.
However, for the third day in a row, the Government’s website does not have any lateral flow tests accessible to purchase.
The UKSHA said on Monday that the opportunity to order tests had been ‘temporarily stopped to fulfill current requests’ due to ‘exceptionally high demand.’

Hospital admissions might exceed 2,000 per day, according to Graham Medley, professor of infectious disease modeling at the London School of Hygiene and Tropical Medicine.
When asked about the chances of the NHS being swamped, Professor Medley told Radio 4’s Today programme on Wednesday morning: ‘…that is one of the most possible things that may happen.’
