DC’s new Stargirl series has been on the air since September, but when will we see more episodes? Will it be getting renewed for another season? It looks like DC is setting up a neat cliffhanger to tease us with. How do you think this show stacks up against its fellow comic book shows in terms of quality and popularity?

To say that the last episode of DC’s Stargirl’s second season was a suspenseful clash between Blue Valley’s heroes and Eclipso would be an understatement. The season finale was not only action-packed, but it also included some game-changing surprises that not only set the stage for new series regulars in Season 3 – Joel McHale, Joy Osmanski, and Neil Hopkins were all previously announced as series regulars for Season 3 – but also revealed the season’s big bad, as well as the season’s title and some unexpected allies.

Eclipso (Nick Tarabay) carried out his ultimate plan in the season finale, which was to get Courtney (Brec Bassinger) to express her hate for him, allowing him to control her as a host. That ownership would provide him authority over the Cosmic Staff, allowing him to combine the Shadowlands with Earth and effectively seize control of the whole planet. To some extent, Eclipso’s strategy succeeded. He was able to control Courtney, but Sylvester Pemberton/Starman (McHale) arrived and assisted Courtney in escaping. Then, with the help of not just the heroes, but also unexpected friends like Sportsmaster (Hopkins), Tigress (Osmanski), and their daughter, Eclipso was finally brought to a halt.
The dust had to settle now that Eclipso was gone. Sylvester has returned and will assist Courtney in learning about the Staff. Charles McNider (Alex Collins) is returning to Indiana to see his wife and kid, who he had previously been unaware of. Long Cindy Burman (Meg DeLacy) wants to join the JSA and The Shade (Jonathan Cake) intends to stay in Blue Valley for a while, the Crocks have moved next door to Courtney and her family. The status of the Crocks, Cindy, and The Shade seem to be part of what gives Season 3 its title, which was revealed to be “Frenemies” at the close of the episode, but the greatest disclosure came at the very end about the likely Big Bad.
The sinister Helix Institute, which was earlier discovered to be harboring Jennie’s (Ysa Penarejo) brother Todd, was briefly revisited in a “post-credits” scene. Nurse Louise Love (who seems to be a spoof of Dr. Benjamin Love from the comics) has told Mister Bones that Jennie has returned to Milwaukee, but she now has “like her” pals in Blue Valley. Mister Bones is fascinated by the concept of heroes and villains coexisting, and suggests that they go to Nebraska. Mister Bones is also seen in the flesh – or rather, the lack thereof – in this scenario.
Mister Bones as a possible villain in Season 3 is an interesting notion, since it might indicate that the show is preparing for its own Infinity Inc. It’s also possible that, like The Shade in Season 2, Mister Bones won’t necessarily turn out to be a villain, and that a greater, more complex danger is on the way.
Whatever the case may be, viewers will have to wait a little longer to see what’s next for Courtney and the rest of Blue Valley. The series is expected to return in 2022, and although no release date has been announced, based on the success of the previous two seasons, Season 3 might appear next summer.
