Free Yourself From The Noose Of Debt

March 22nd, 2010 by News World Report

Credit card debt has created a difficult financial situation for people across America. What can you do when you’ve lost your job, and you don’t have a way to pay your bills or meet the needs of your family? There are social offices that can help you out with your bills until you can get back on your feet. Don’t give up. Here are some tips that can help you get started in the right direction.

Because of a lack of finances, you are probably already living with just the basics. In fact, you may be in such a difficult situation that you can’t even pay all of your bills. The first thing you will need to do is find a way to generate extra income. Consider yard jobs, baby sitting in your home, cleaning jobs and even look for a way to make money online.

In order to generate money on the internet, you will need to spend time searching for job possibilities. If you have a blog or a web site, you might consider using AdSense or Amazon to add ads to your site and generate money when people click on them. There are many companies that allow you to become an affiliate and earn money by helping them earn money.

When you are searching the internet for ways to make money, be careful of scams. The best way to avoid them is to read the reviews about the site. Don’t just read the ones that are on the company’s site because they can eliminate any negative reviews. Look for reviews on a site the company has no control over.

You will find thousands of quick ways to earn money on the internet, and most of them will claim to be free. They are free to sign up, but invariably there is a charge for the information you need to get started. Avoid these sites, especially since you can’t afford to lose any money at this point in your life. Search until you find something that doesn’t involve making an upfront payment.

It’s time to look for a new opportunity on the internet to help you pay off your debt, and get yourself reestablished financially. Be willing to step out and learn new things. Be creative, and use your imagination. See if you can find a home income opportunity on the internet that you can do while you work at the job you have. That will help you to generate extra money, and it may even grow into something bigger than you ever expected. Who knows you may be able to work full-time at home!

It’s time to get up, and do something about your financial situation. There are hundreds of opportunities available on the internet for those who have the initiative to look for them. Don’t be afraid to study, and learn something new that will help you get out of debt.

Garage Sales And The Hunt For Them

March 22nd, 2010 by News World Report

There comes a time in every person’s life where he or she considers hitting a garage sale to find some sort of item or another. This is mainly because we as a human species are exceedingly cheap at heart, for one thing. Also, we’ve convinced ourselves that what we need is more junk in our lives on a 24/7 basis. Adventures in garage sale hunting, however, will quickly disabuse anyone of the notion that they need more junk.

Today, it’s a fact that the garage sale industry has turned such activities into events that we now look at as being similar to watching the grand old game of baseball, that’s how much of a national pastime it’s become. And though buying more and more stuff at a garage sale is certainly something that will occur, searching out the right sale for the right digital sport watch can be like searching for El Dorado, some would say.

What, then, can one say about cruising the local neighborhoods endlessly on a Saturday afternoon looking for signs of a garage sale, such as a badly Xeroxed ad tacked onto a telephone pole? Apparently, not much but we do it anyway, all in the expectation of finding little Billy an electric guitar for sale at a garage sale held by two little old ladies selling lace doilies and tea cozies, right?

The guitar advertised for sale probably went long ago and those doilies are the only things left, so a box of them probably will end up in the basement or the attic because everybody knows a garage sale in which nothing was bought is like an African safari in which not even a lonely and forlorn gazelle happened to be spotted. And, truly, hunting for a garage sale is kind of like going out on a safari in many respects.

Maybe one is going out on the big game hunt in search of fitness equipment, which has come to replace the gym and the monthly payment we used to pay and which eventually became completely unused within about a week of purchasing it. Fortunately, we can put that gym equipment in our favorite room; the one we intend to turn into a high-tech gymnasium or fitness room of our own. Whether or not it begins to gather dust is completely up to us, though.

In reality, it hardly makes a bit of difference whether or not we really managed to locate anything of any worth at one of these sales. Instead, we’re just like those big game hunters of olden times; we’re out for the biggest game we can find, which in this case means maybe a box of old 1970s-era disco music cassettes that we once danced wildly to in our high school days. It kind of thrills us like getting on a roller coaster used to do.

At heart, it really matters little whether we find anything that we actually need at a garage sale. Instead, what really matters is that we’re out there looking for our own ‘Treasure of the Sierra Madre, ‘ and we go to great lengths to find that treasure. Usually, it’s been looted long ago and we normally find that what we’re left holding is not much. But it certainly thrills us with the adventure, right?

Stock Investment Schemes – The Pump and Dump

March 21st, 2010 by News World Report

Do not become a victim to a con artist’s stock market publicity.

Also known as “hype and dump manipulation,” pump and dump schemes happen on a daily basis.  The way it works is this.  Crooked individuals will go around the internet and make posts on message boards or blogs promoting a company’s stock.  That stock is usually an obscure stock.  It is unfortunate for many innocent investors that a lot of interest is put into a stock due to the false posts all over the internet.  Once the price of the stock goes up, or is “pumped up,” the perpetrators of this scam quickly sell off the stock and make a huge profit before the stock settles back to its normal price.  Those who bought the stock at its highest price lose out on a lot of money.  Back in the late 90’s, pump and dump schemes were everywhere especially in the form of spam e-mail.  People dreaming of getting rich quick fell victim to this kind of fraud.

Not only is the internet a good place for perpetrators to initiate the pump and dump scam, but also telemarketing was another perfect method for them.  Sometimes, telemarketers will call you and utilize the same techniques they used on the internet.  They will make claims about “insider” trading knowledge on a particular stock that does not seems to fail and that you need to “take action” right away or you will miss the “opportunity of a lifetime.”  These calls may be originating from company promoters who are being paid to make these calls.  These are the same people who will skip town after the stock price is “pumped” by their false trading tips.

How to Avoid Pump and Dump Money Making Schemes

Try to avoid purchasing stocks solely based on tips from insiders especially if they are initiating the phone call on you.  Also ignore any anonymous posts you see on the internet.  It is perhaps that the person promoting a stock has no clue what they are talking about.  It is most likely an intentional attempt to jack up the price of a stock with no solid basis.  It is best to do your own research on a stock.

There are lots of investment fraud schemes out there such as the pump and dump scam.  It is up to you to educate yourself to recognize what is and is not legitimate.  By doing so, you can minimize becoming a victim to the crime of investment fraud.

Our Accumulated ’stuff’ And Why We Never Let It Go

March 20th, 2010 by News World Report

It seems like we manage to somehow collect many objects as we go through life. Some of them are valuable and should be kept while others might not be so valued or don’t even bring with them many good memories but we just can’t get rid of them, for some reason. Our accumulated ’stuff’ and why we never let it go — such as that Yamaha acoustic guitar we spent money on long ago — can be fascinating to study.

Maybe the thing was bought in some pawnshop back during the salad days — otherwise known as the ‘college experience’ — and it was never really used because there never seemed to be enough time to actually learn how to make the barre chords necessary to pick out the first few measures of Deep Purple’s ‘Smoke on the Water.’ For whatever reason, there it sits in the corner, now collecting dust.

A guitar — whether acoustic or electric — however, is kind of cool looking. One can’t say the same thing about a couple of wet dry vacuums, though. For sure, there’s bound to be someone out there who has collected a couple of them and now has them occupying a place of pride (or some musty, dusty corner) in a garage or basement somewhere on this planet. That fact can be taken to the bank.

Maybe the vacuum was going to be used to finally get a handle on the garage and the water leakage that sometimes resulted because we just never got around to applying new seals to the bottom of the garage door. At any rate, the days when we wanted to use such a powerful vacuum are probably now long gone and receding rapidly in the rearview mirror that we call our past life.

Still and all, a great many items we hold onto serve to bring back pleasant memories. It might be just be so, though how something like a busted tennis racket — which got that way from being pounded in frustration on the asphalt — might bring back misty watercolored memories could just be one of life’s great mysteries in and of itself. At any rate, there’s a cheap racket for some garage sale, probably.

And when it comes to items like children’s furniture, why we might still be holding onto cherry baby furniture — which we bought when little Sarah was newly arrived but which hasn’t been used in 25 years — can be a real mystery. For sure, it would seem that baby furniture might better belong in a garage sale or in some other family’s home that could really use it.

In truth, the question ‘Are we ever able to let go of ’stuff?’ will probably never be fully answered and is likely to remain a great mystery to many of us. Maybe getting rid of all of that junk is just too difficult or perhaps there’s so much nostalgia wrapped up in it that it’s impossible to let go. For sure, that stuff is likely to bring back memories even when we’re well into our Social Security years.

Have A Thirty Dollar Shopping Spree At Yard Sales

March 20th, 2010 by News World Report

If your hobby is shopping but the current economy has put a halt to that hobby, then try taking thirty dollars to a yard sale and see what you can come home with.

There are two types of yard sale fans. There the people who live for then next time that they get to host another sale and there are those that spend every Friday and Saturday during the season visiting as many yard sales as possible. There are even some that will take time to visit yard sales to buy items that can be resold later at their own yard sales.

The items that can be found at a typical yard sale are numerous. At one sale you may find a book of scrapbook ideas, while at another there will be a for sale digital camera. At still another you may find an old wet dry vacuum that is missing all its hoses and attachments. You never know what you may find until you walk through the makeshift tables and shelves that are set up in the driveway or on the lawn of the sale.

Many people have a yard sale to get rid of excess that has been purchased through the year. Other times, the sales are held to liquidate the estate of a person that has died. Many times, yard sales are held after weddings where two household are being combined into one,

If you are considering a yard sale, here are some keys to success.

Put a price on everything. People will walk through a sale and see items that they may be interested in, but be afraid to insult you with too low an offer. Printed price stickers make the process of pricing yard sale items easier. Use color coding of the price stickers if more than one family is involved in selling items. This helps to keep track of how the profits are to be split at the end of the sale.

You should be willing to take less than the asking price for any item you have in the sale. If it is in the yard and does not sell, what will you do with it? Many times the yard sale is the last stop before the garbage dump. Cling too tightly to items and you will end up paying to get rid of them at the dump. Sell it at a lower price and it gets reused by someone else.

  • Follow Your Nose: Sniff Controller Gives the Severely Disabled a New Way to Communicate and Move
Assistive technology that helps severely paralyzed people navigate the world and communicate with others often taps into whatever abilities the disabled retain, such as blinking or moving the mouth and tongue. Now, for the first time, researchers have invented a device that allows the paralyzed to write, surf the Web and steer an electronic wheelchair--all by sniffing. Initial tests, described July 26 in Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences ( PNAS ), suggest that many severely paralyzed people can easily master the "sniff controller," which offers certain advantages over other technological aids.

  • Report: State Dept. Official May Go To Work For Google
A State Department official who's made something of a splash due to his use of Twitter might soon begin collecting paychecks from Google, according to a new report.  Jared Cohen would supposedly assume a "strategic policy role" at the company. Cohen has an interesting track record.  He's received degrees from Stanford and Oxford, authored several books, and according to his State Department bio, focuses on counter-terrorism, the Middle East, and youth issues, among other things. Cohen is also the person responsible for asking Twitter to delay its maintenance when Iranian protesters were using the service.  And for better or worse, the New York Times reported that he's one of two officials who "raised hackles on Capitol Hill" and "embarrassed the State Department" with informal tweets during a trip to Syria. (Their biggest misstep was probably mentioning that Cohen challenged the Minister of Telecom to a cake-eating contest, if you're curious.) Anyway, back to the Google-related rumor.  Kara Swisher spoke to "sources close to the situation" and reported afterward, "Cohen has been in discussions with Google in recent months about going there, those sources said, although it is not a done deal." Cohen would no doubt be a considerable asset to Google.  The company will just have to consider whether hiring him (assuming he's agreeable to the move) might cause it to receive even more attention from antitrust regulators.
  • Internet Gambling Bill To Get Mark-Up Tuesday
The Internet Gambling Regulation, Consumer Protection and Enforcement Act (H.R. 2267) which was debated at a Congressional hearing this week is set to be amended or marked up by the House Financial Services Committee next Tuesday. Michael Waxman, spokesperson for the Safe and Secure Internet Gambling Initiative tells WebProNews "Chairman Frank is clearly intent on moving forward his legislation to regulate online gambling activity." "This mark up demonstrates that Congress is serious about moving Chairman Frank's bill forward and establishing a strict regulatory framework for Internet gambling activity," said Waxman.  "The passage of this legislation would be a win-win as it will protect consumers, create an estimated 32,000 new jobs over five years and provide federal and state governments with as much as $72 billion in new revenues over ten years."   The legislation, introduced by Chairman Frank in May 2009, would establish a framework to permit licensed gambling operators to accept wagers from individuals in the U.S.  In addition to mandating an array of consumer protections, the legislation reinforces the rights of each state to determine whether or not to allow Internet gambling activity for people accessing the Internet within the state and to apply other restrictions on the activity as determined necessary.  Since its introduction, a bi-partisan group of 69 co-sponsors has signed onto the legislation. A recent analysis by H2 Gambling capital predicts that Internet gambling regulation would create as many as 32,000 jobs over its first five years.  "During this difficult economy, the revenue and job creation potential that regulated Internet gambling provides will go a long way to help states and families alike balance their budgets," said Waxman.
  • AOL Launches Advertising Hub For Politics
AOL has launched AOL Advertising Politics hub aimed at campaigns, advocacy groups and companies looking to target audiences online. Online display advertising has become a key factor for political campaigns. With the Supreme Court ruling earlier this year lifting the restrictions on political ad spending from corporations, companies can now join campaign and issue advocacy groups in influencing voters online. AOL hopes to capitalize on the upcoming November elections. The Politics hub will help political marketers figure out how to structure their online campaign from using display advertising to help fundraise, build name recognition, organize operations, persuade voters, respond in real time to negative coverage, get the vote out, or educate voters about issues related to the race. "AOL has positioned itself to be the go-to resource for political marketers needing to reach their constituencies through our ability to reach target audiences at scale with our comprehensive set of innovative, highly-targeted products," said Jeff Levick, President, AOL Global Advertising and Strategy. "Our Politics hub lets campaigns and issue advocacy groups take their messages directly to voters and key influencers in a proactive way through display advertising, and we make the on-boarding process something that is simple, easy and intuitive." The AOL Advertising Politics hub includes: *Ad Desk for Politics- A "how-to" guide for political targeting via AOL's display advertising platform. *Display University- A microsite to help marketers build their first campaigns and improve existing ones.
