Rand Paul was invited on “The Rachel Maddow Show” after winning the Republican Primary to run for the United States Senate. Just as his famous father does, Rand Paul has a generous libertarian streak, and he had been critical of the 1964 Civil Rights Act, stating he does not believe government should tell private businesses how to run. And Rachel Maddow obviously was not about to let that go lightly, especially on her own show. The Civil Rights Act is a touchy subject, and the wrong words can get a candidate on the fast track to having the extra cash they have in campaign coffers going to waste.

He went on to say that of the 10 components of the act, he was completely behind of nine of them, but the one he didn’t like concerned business practices. He is a Tea Party darling, already has the Sarah Palin endorsement (though backing a candidate based on approval from a former governor that didn’t finish one term seems foolhardy), and is clearly after the populist right wing for votes. Before appearing on “The Rachel Maddow Show,” according to the Christian Science Monitor, he celebrated his victory at one the poshest country clubs in Kentucky.

There are taboos for a reason

Rand Paul did himself no favor by stating something negative about the Civil Rights Act. Granted, he made clear the reasoning behind what he was saying: he simply opposes excessive government intervention into the private sector. Governmental intrusions often benefit no one but the government, but sometimes, intrusions are made when doing nothing would permit the continued existence of an egregiously foul practice, which is what the Civil Rights Act banned.

With elections due later on this coming year in Egypt, workers have begun to step-up their claims for an improvement in the minimum wage.  The thirty-five Egyptian Pounds monthly minimum wage has continued unrevised going back twenty six years and many regular Egyptians think something needs to be done as inflation is just about 10%.

Grayson was endorsed by Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell, but that wasn’t enough to keep the progeny of the famous Libertarian off the ballot. Incumbent Senator Blanche Lincoln of Arkansas is currently battling out the Democratic primary with Arkansas Lt Gov Bill Halter.

Throughout the city a moratorium on payday lenders and pawn shops has been declared by the city council of Des Moines, Iowa. The purpose of it is to restrain new businesses of that type from setting up shop in the city while regulatory legislation is considered. Meanwhile, the Iowa legislature is considering legal restrictions on payday lenders, and the federal government is considering the same thing as part of the financial reform bill.

Blaming payday lenders for urban blight

The Des Moines City Council has put a provisional stop to any new payday lenders in order to mull over some potential changes in zoning code along with potential financial regulation changes, according to the Des Moines Register. Payday lenders are said to be the cause, or at least implicated, in urban blight.

New zoning possibilities

The Des Moines City Council is currently looking onto proposed zoning laws. There may be distance requirements between payday lenders and pawn shops, such as those that already exist for liquor stores and bars in Des Moines. There are concerns that more payday lenders and pawn shops in the area would leave a negative impact on Des Moines, especially real estate. Questions on the subject have been brought up before, so this is not the first time the urban blight argument has been raised.

When a government runs a deficit, it can either cut expenditures, increase revenue or do a combination of both.

Ohio passed a comprehensive payday lending reform law, HB 545, in 2008. Interest rates lenders were charging on payday cash advances were capped with this law. After two years since the law went into effect, Representatives Jennifer Garrison, Matt Lundy and Gerald Stebelton are co-sponsoring HB 486, a law intended to further limit payday lenders.

Though the payday lending industry is not often liked or well received, HB 486 attempts to penalize payday lenders for following the law. However, over the two-week period of most payday loans, that interest rate does not provide the income lenders need to cover their costs. More than 700 payday lending stores closed down, leaving 2,500 Ohio residents unemployed.

In an attempt to remain above waters, Ohio payday lenders began operating under the Small Loans Act. Ohio lenders are permitted to charge fees for check cashing, loan origination and credit checks under the Small Loans Act. The Small Loans Act also requires increased reporting, cash-on-hand and more regulated advertising. The payday lending stores in Ohio that began charging fees and operating under the Small Loans Act have followed the letter of the law, ensuring that they are providing a legal service. And HB 486 wishes to end this practice.

Many legislators who believe payday lenders need more regulation are looking to figures such as 391 percent APR to back their finds. However, both HB 545 and HB 486 do not take into consideration that payday loans are specifically designed for short-term financial solutions meant only for two to four week periods. Additionally, the only other option available for most payday loan customers is to head face-to-face with bank fees of $ 30 or more for bounced checks. Many payday loan customers do not have the required line of credit to be eligible for more traditional financial products.

Senators John Kerry, Democrat of Massachusetts, and independents of Connecticut, Joe Lieberman, presented a climate and energy package designed to limit climate change and promote clean energy jobs. Kerry said the climate change bill must be passed this year as it has something in it for everyone. But one of the vote-getting goodies in the climate bill is expanded off-shore drilling — a provision that could backfire in the wake of the oil spill in the Gulf of Mexico.

Negotiations with lawmakers by Kerry and Senator Lindsey Graham, Republican of South Carolina, on the climate and energy bill appeared to be humming along until just last month. Graham all of the sudden withdrew his support of the energy legislation under pressure from GOP true believers. Right Wing enforcers were really upset with Graham for giving Democrats installment loans of Republican support. As an excuse, Graham gave an oblique reference to immigration politics. But potential Republican votes that the climate change bill needs to pass may have gone out the window along with Graham.

He also explains that this specific climate bill would reduce the deficit by $21 billion in nine years.

Kerry thinks that it seems to be long overdue for American to finally lead on climate change. He says that he will definitely mount a “full court press” to pass the energy legislation in 2010. Galbraith was talking about opium. Suspected of getting rich from opium trade in one of the world’s poorest countries is Ahmad Wali. The Obama administration doesn’t have much evidence yet and the Karzai brothers deny this completely.

For his latest visit to Washington, Hamid Karzai was personally escorted on his flight from Kabul by none other than Lt. Gen. Karl W. Eikenberry, the ambassador to Afghanistan. The New York Times reports that Eikenberry plans to assure all the reporters that will be at the White House that he now has faith in the Afghan president’s determination to succeed. Last November, Eikenberry told the Obama administration, in leaked classified cables obtained by the New York Times, that Karzai “is not an adequate strategic partner” and “continues to shun responsibility for any sovereign burden”.

We’re in too deep with Hamid Karzai

Eikenberry knew exactly what he was talking about when he criticized Karzai. He is now a retired Army lieutenant general who had once served at the top American commander in Afghanistan in 2002-03. In the classified cables, he warned that a major military commitment to Afghanistan would result in “astronomical costs” — which means tens of billions of dollars — and would deepen the dependence of the Afghan government on the United States. So far, that much has come true.

The Labor Party saw defeat in the U.K. election results and Prime Minister Gordon Brown has announced he will resign. The Conservative Party is working on a coalition government agreement with the Liberal Democrats. Labor is making a counteroffer to the Liberal Democrats, and it appears it will be months until a British Government is clearly established. Compounding difficulties is that austerity measures will likely be part of the new government platform, as spending deficits have resulted in the need for some debt relief.

Gordon Brown gives up his post as a sacrifice

According to the Wall Street Journal, Gordon Brown resigning may be an offer of sacrifice to entice the Liberal Democrats. Brown will remain for now. Brown is resigning his post of head of the Labor Party immediately, which might be an attempt to woo Liberal Democrats into forming a coalition government with Labor instead of the Conservative Party.

Coalition governments present difficulties

This puts Nick Clegg and the Liberal Democrats in a position where they must reach an agreement with one or the other party to form a government. The Liberal Democrats are in talks with David Cameron and the Conservatives to fix the first hung parliament in 36 years.

Why this is bad

The United Kingdom, just as the United States, has been having problems lately. Taxation of the U.K. is more than in the U.S. (up to 50 percent of income) and alongside other economic woes in Europe, also has a growing deficit. If European markets don’t stabilize, which the upcoming Greece bailout is supposed to help with, more dire repercussions may be felt worldwide.
